Mission Photographs 1931-1962, n.d.

This series comprises approximately 275 black and white photographs pertaining to the United Lutheran Church in America's (ULCA) Japan mission field from 1931-1962. A variety of subjects are represented and include schools, missionaries, people, churches, buildings, the Jiai An Children's Home, Kyushu Gakuin School for Boys, and Lutheran Theological Seminary. Most of these photographs were used by the ULCA publication The Lutheran. Some were also used in the Board of Foreign Mission (BFM) publication Foreign Missionary. The photographs are in good condition with only a small number of oversized photographs curled at their edges. Many have captions, but also have notations made by The Lutheran that either mark the photograph's image or prohibit the reading of the photograph's accompanying caption. There are some photographs obtained from the National Lutheran Council News Bureau, the Lutheran World Federation, and photographer Leon V. Kofod. It is not known if The Lutheran took the other photographs used or if it acquired the photographs from some other entity. Two subjects of note include photographs of the 1962 visit to the Jiai An Children's Home by Japan's Crown Prince Akihito and his wife Crown Princess Michiko. These photographs are located in the folder marked "People." Also of interest are photographs from the 40th anniversary of the Jiai An Children's Home and a ceremony to honor ULCA missionary Maude Powlas who served in Japan from 1918-1960. Files are arranged alphabetically by subject.
